405 among 596 escaped inmates return to Satkhira jail

Following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina amid a mass uprising by students and the public, 405 out of 596 inmates who escaped from Satkhira Jail have returned.

This was confirmed by Satkhira Jail Superintendent Hasna Jahan Bithi on Wednesday afternoon.

The jailbreak occurred on Sunday when a group of agitated people attacked and vandalized the prison, causing 596 inmates to flee.

Eyewitnesses reported that around 6:30pm on Sunday, several thousand people broke into Satkhira Jail, dismantling the main gate and freeing all prisoners from the cells and general wards.

Ashraf Hossain from Keragachhi village in Kolaroa and Abdul Rakib from Koila village, who had been imprisoned for their involvement in an attack on Sheikh Hasina's motorcade, stated that a group of people urged them to leave the prison on Sunday evening.

They have since returned after hearing announcements from the prison authorities.

Superintendent Hasna Jahan Bithi said that among the 596 inmates, there were various offenders, including 27 serving life sentences, of which 23 have returned.
