Khulna cop’s family at a loss after tragic death during protest clash

"Everything is over for me. I have no reason to live anymore. How will I survive with this little child? What will our future be? I don't know anything."

These were the words of Mitu Biswas, wife of Constable Suman Kumar Gharami, who was killed in a clash with protesters in Khulna.

While Mitu kept pleading for her husband to be returned to her, Suman’s six-year-old daughter, Snigdha, was repeatedly asking for her father.

On Saturday, the family members were found weeping continuously at their home.

After learning of her husband's death on Friday, Mitu rushed to Khulna City Medical College Hospital.

There, she pleaded with everyone she encountered, begging them to bring her husband back.

Witnessing her distress brought tears to everyone's eyes. High-ranking police officers, including the Khulna Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Md Mozammel Haque, and Khulna Range DIG Mainul Haque, visited the hospital to offer condolences, but nothing could console Mitu.

Suman, who was originally from Kachua Upazila in Bagerhat District, lived with his wife and daughter in a rented house in the Boyra area of Khulna city.

He served as the bodyguard of Assistant Commissioner Soumen Biswas in the Sonadanga zone of Khulna Metropolitan Police.

He was killed on Friday evening in the Mohammadnagar area of Khulna during protest.

Assistant Commissioner Soumen Biswas recounted that he and Suman were together during the clash but got separated in the chaos. He hid in a drain for about four hours to save his life, while the protesters brutally beat Suman to death at some point.

Suman’s father, a decorated freedom fighter named Sushil Kumar Gharami, was left speechless upon hearing of his only son’s death.

His mother, Gita Rani, held her son’s photo close and lamented, asking: "What good will taking all these pictures do? Can you bring my son back?"

Suman’s only sister, Suma Gharami, collapsed on the floor, crying out: "Who killed my brother? They have destroyed our family. Who will take care of us now?"

The tragic news has left the family and community in deep sorrow, with neighbors and relatives trying to offer comfort.

Suman’s school friends and colleagues also expressed their grief, describing him as a kind and lively person who brightened up any room he was in.

Saiful Islam, the president of the Upazila Awami League, said that every death is painful and demanded justice for those who killed Suman.

After an autopsy on Saturday afternoon, Suman's body was handed over to his family after a Guard of Honor at the police lines.

The atmosphere was filled with grief as family members and police officers broke down in tears.

Suman’s body was then transported to his home in Kachua, Bagerhat, where he was laid to rest. His parents, in accordance with their wishes, chose to bury him rather than cremate him.

Khulna Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Mozammel Haque confirmed that Suman was killed in the attack, and 30 others were injured, with several in critical condition.

He assured that those responsible for Suman's death would be brought to justice.
