Nowfel’s home attacked, MP’s office torched in Chittagong protests

The residence of Education Minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel in Chittagong’s Chashma Hill area came under attack on Saturday evening.

Protesters also set fire to the office of Chittagong-10 MP, Mohiuddin Bachchu, in the Wasa area, marking a violent escalation in the ongoing Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

The attack on the education minister’s home occurred when participants of the movement reached the No 2 gate area of the city.

A group then moved towards Mayor’s Gali area, where they hurled bricks at the minister’s residence, damaging windows on the second floor.

The attackers subsequently broke the gate, entered the premises, and vandalized two cars parked below.

No injuries were reported.

Nowfel, who was in Dhaka at the time, told Dhaka Tribune: “My mother was at home. As our home is open for public access, they took the chance.”

Kazi Md Tarek Aziz, additional deputy commissioner (public relations) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police confirmed the incident: “We have received reports of the incident and are currently investigating the matter.”

Protesters also set fire to the office of Chittagong 10 MP Mohiuddin Bachchu in the Wasa area, which served as his main campaign headquarters during the 12th general elections.

Eyewitnesses reported that after standing at the Newmarket intersection from 3pm on Saturday, the protesters marched towards Tigerpass around 5pm.

A faction of the procession reached Tigerpass intersection and vandalized a police box. No police presence was noted around the protest.
