A fishing trawler sank due to low pressure in the Shibchar area of Dhalchar in the Bay of Bengal estuary in Bhola’s Char Fasson upazila. While five people from the trawler were rescued, eight fishermen remain missing.
Char Fasson upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Maruf Hossain Minar confirmed the information on Friday.
He said that a week ago, 13 fishermen ventured into the sea in a fishing trawler owned by Dulal Chowkidar from Sukna Khali Matsya Ghat of Ahmedpur union in Char Fasson upazila, despite bad weather conditions. On its way back on Friday night, the trawler overturned after being hit by huge waves, causing all 13 fishermen to fall into the river. Another fishing trawler rescued five fishermen later that night, but eight fishermen are still missing.
The missing fishermen are Noor Alam, 30, Kabir, 32, Shah Alam Mollah, 50, Md Billal, 50, Sadek Mal, 60, Sabuj, 40, Md Hossain Majhi, 50, and Jahangir Mistry, 45.
The rescued fishermen are Dulal Majhi, 40, Nazim, 44, Suman, 38, Shaheen, 25, and Monir, 33.
Abdul Mannan, a member of Ahmedpur Union Parishad (UP), said: "Last Friday, 13 fishermen went fishing in the Shibchar area of the Bay of Bengal in a trawler. The trawler sank on Friday night due to strong currents. Five fishermen have been rescued, but eight are still missing. The families of the missing fishermen are very worried."
In this regard, Char Fasson upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Maruf Hossain Minar said: "We have informed the Coast Guard officials to rescue the missing fishermen. We have also informed our higher authorities. Local fish traders have also personally come out to rescue the missing fishermen."
