A policeman was killed in a clash with protesters centring mass procession under the banner of the Anti-Discriminatory Student Movement in Khulna on Friday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Suman Gharami, a constable.
Besides, 100 people including 20 policemen were injured in sporadic clashes from afternoon to evening.
Administrative Officer of Khulna City Medical College Hospital Hamidul Islam said four policemen were brought after Friday evening.
One of them was dead, he added.
His body has been kept at the morgue of the hospital.
Three others are under treatment at the hospital. The injured policemen are Mazharul Islam, Sohanur Rahman Sohag, and Soumen.
Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) Commissioner Md Mozammel Haque said that a constable named Suman Gharami was killed and 20 policemen were injured in the clash.
Suman was beaten to death. Besides, 20 injured people were also beaten and seriously injured. One of them is undergoing treatment at ICU.
He said that the police tried to disperse the protesters by firing some rubber bullets. No one was killed directly.
But when the police were coming back, they beat them to death and injured them, said the police official.
Dr Milan Biswas, a physician of Khulna University Medical centre, said that about 80 students have been treated at the centre.
Most of those who arrived were wounded by tearshells and rubber bullets. Those whose condition is a bit serious have been sent to Khulna Medical College Hospital, he added.
