An attack on a police vehicle, a traffic box, and the roadside nameplate of the “Police-Muktijuddah Museum” occurred at Chittagong's Wasa intersection on Friday afternoon.
The incident took place as the mass procession of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, originating from the Andarkilla area, reached the Wasa intersection.
Protesters accused ruling party leaders of obstructing their march towards the Wasa area. Upon seeing the police's armoured vehicle at the Wasa intersection, protesters began pelting stones at it. Following this, when the armoured vehicle moved from Wasa towards Almas cinema hall, the protesters vandalized the police box at the Wasa intersection.
Additionally, the roadside nameplate of the “Police-Muktijuddah Museum” at the Dampara Police Line, adjacent to the Wasa intersection, was vandalized. Despite the presence of police officers, no intervention was made to stop the vandals.
Earlier, after Friday prayers, the mass procession from the Andarkilla intersection took around 15 minutes to reach the Newmarket intersection via the Laldighi and Rifle Club area. Subsequently, the procession proceeded to the Tigerpass intersection in the presence of thousands of protesters. After a brief pause there, the procession continued towards the Wasa intersection, where the vandalism occurred.
Regarding the police box vandalism, Chittagong Metropolitan Police Additional Commissioner (Traffic) Masud Ahmed said: "The protestors attacked the police box while taking the procession. There were no casualties as there was no policeman in the police box at that time. We will decide whether to file a case in this regard."
