Students, under the banner of anti-discriminatory student movement, at Rajshahi University (RU) have withdrawn all types of protest after issuing a 30-day ultimatum to the government to meet their demands on the quota reform.
On Thursday at 4pm, in front of the university's central library, a press conference was held by the students leading the movement.
At the press conference, one of the coordinators of the movement, Mokarram Hossain, said: "We have joined the nationwide anti-discriminatory student movement. We have reached a stage where our demands have been satisfactorily resolved. This has pleased the entire student community of Bangladesh.
He continued, emphasizing additional demands: "We insist that the administration ensures the safety of students involved in the anti-discrimination movement and promptly reopens the university. Law enforcement should be restricted to the campus entrance.
“Residential halls must only accommodate legitimate students. Compensation and job opportunities should be guaranteed for families of students who have been martyred or injured during the movement. Moreover, a swift investigation report should be submitted for those responsible for the deaths of our comrades," he added.
Regarding the case filed against university students by Chhatra League activists, he added, "I have not yet been informed about this case. If any case has been filed against us, it must be withdrawn immediately because ordinary students like us were not involved in any violent incidents. The Law Minister has assured that this case will be withdrawn, and it must be done. If not, we will return to the streets."
In addition to Mokarram Hossain, other student leaders from RU involved in the anti-discrimination movement, including mathematics student Sujan Bhoomik, economics students Tofayel Ahmed and Monimul Haque, and Arabic department student Rezwan Gazi Maharaj, were present at the press conference.
Notably on July 16, cases were filed against 20 individuals, including RU students, related to various acts of vandalism and arson by Chhatra League activists.
On July 17, RU Chhatra League's Organizing Secretary, Kaiyum Mia, filed this case at Motihar Police Station in the city. Among the five students present at the press conference, Tofayel Ahmed and Monimul Haque are also implicated in this case.
