The chairman of Shorafpur union parishad in Khulna's Dumuria upazila was shot dead on Saturday night.
The deceased has been identified as Sheikh Rabiul Islam Rabi, 45, the union's three-time chairman.
He was also a member of the Khulna district unit Awami League.
Sukanta Saha, officer-in-charge of Dumuria police station, said the body was kept at Khulna Medical College Hospital.
At first, everyone thought it was a road crash that killed him, But later, when he was taken to the hospital, it was found he was shot, he added.
Kamruzzaman Jamal, joint secretary of Khulna district Awami League, said he rushed to the hospital after receiving the news.
Chairman Rabiul Islam Rabi has been shot dead by unknown miscreants. Doctors said he had seven bullet wounds in different parts of his body, he added.
