12,000 families marooned in Sariakandi as Jamuna flowing above danger mark

The water level in the Jamuna River has continued to increase due to heavy rainfall and onrush water from upstream which left 12,000 families marooned in Sariakandi upazila of Bogra.

On Thursday afternoon, water in the Jamuna River was flowing 32cm above the danger mark.

In the last 24 hours, about 12,000 families have become waterlogged due to an increase of 68cm water level in the river.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer Touhidur Rahman said that people have started to face flood situation in the upazila.

According to the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) of Bogra, the danger level of the Jamuna River at Sariakandi is 16.25 meters. At 3pm on Thursday, the water level was recorded 16.57 meters. That means the water in the river flows 32 cm above the danger level.

Meanwhile, due to the increase in water in the Jamuna river, strong currents and eddies have been created.

Amid this, Jamuna River has continued to erode in Shimultair and Manikdair villages of Chaluabari union of the upazila and Ichamara village of Kamalpur union since a few days ago.

The low-lying areas of Chaluabari, Kajla, Karnibari, Chandanbaisha and Bohail Union of the upazila have been flooded.

As a result, farmers in these areas are cutting the immature jute plants.

Some 75 villages have been inundated till afternoon.

In this, 41,370 people of 11,970 families in Sariakandi municipality, Hatsherpur, Chaluabari, Kajala, Karnibari, Bohail, Kamalpur, Chandanbaisha, Qutubpur, Sariakandi Sadar, Narchi, Fulbari and Velabari unions have become waterlogged.

Flood water has inundated 58 houses completely and 190 houses partially.

Besides, 50 km of unpaved roads are flooded.

According to the Upazila Agriculture Office, water entered 530 hectares of land belonging to 2,860 families.

Besides, water has risen in the grounds of 1,500 tubewells and 31 government primary schools.

Eight fish farms covering an area of ​​5.37 hectares were inundated.

UNO Touhidur Rahman said that flood information has been collected from various departments.

People trapped in water are moving in boats. The control room has already been opened, a preparatory meeting has been held to deal with the flood, he said.

Miking, rescue boats, and other engine-run boats have been kept ready in all areas.

Besides, six flood shelter centres and some educational institutions have been kept ready.
