Mohammad Tarek’s body washed up on the shore in the Samiti Para area in the city on Tuesday evening, said Md Masud Rana, the executive magistrate in charge of the district administration's tourism cell.

Tarek, 14, hailed from the newly formed Eidgaon upazila.

Masud said after the Eid prayer, seven teenage friends from Shah Fakir Bazar in Eidgaon upazila came to visit the sea beach to celebrate Eid-ul-Azha on Monday morning.

While wandering on the beach, they went bathing between the Kolatoli and Sugandha points. During this time, Tarek was swept away by the tides. Despite extensive efforts of his friends and people present at the scene, they could not rescue him.

"At around 5:30pm, locals reported seeing a body wash ashore at the beach in Samiti Para. A team of beach workers arrived at the scene and recovered the body," the executive magistrate said.
