Cyclone Remal ruins Eid celebrations in Khulna coastal areas

Residents of Dashalia village in Koira are still reeling from the devastating effects of Cyclone Remal.

Although the broken embankment has been repaired, life has not returned to normal for those in the flooded areas.

Many are still living in damaged homes, and farmers are struggling with flooded shrimp enclosures, which are their main source of income. Desperation and hardship are rampant, with relief efforts proving insufficient.

The arrival of the holy Eid-ul-Azha has brought no joy to the people. Their festive spirit has been dampened by the cyclone's aftermath.

This bleak picture is not limited to Dashalia village alone; the entire Koira region affected by Cyclone Remal is facing similar hardships.

The cyclone has robbed coastal residents of their Eid celebrations this year, leaving families worried about having enough food to eat. The erosion caused by Cyclone Remal in the Kopotakkho River has only worsened their plight.

Tania Khatun, Najma Begum, Shahiduliah Gazi, and many others from Dashalia village in Maharajpur Union have expressed that Cyclone Remal has left them with nothing but sorrow.

Even physically challenged Afshar Uddin, at the age of 70, continues to work to feed his family amidst the ruins caused by the river.

"Everything is lost in water," said Afshar Uddin. "Everything is gone. Only the house is standing. The river's tides are always terrifying."

Sixty families in Dashalia village were severely affected by the disaster, losing many of their possessions to the salty waters of the Kopotakkho River. Some managed to salvage a few items during the flood, but many are now destitute, having lost rice, clothes, utensils, and more.

Mustafa Kamal, a local UP member, highlighted that the coastal region is disaster-prone, with hundreds of people living on the Dasalia Embankment facing storms every year.

"People here have no choice but to rely on fate," he added.

Abdullah Al Mahmud, chairman of Maharajpur UP, emphasized the urgent need to make the embankments sustainable to protect coastal residents from constant danger.

Khulna Zilla Parishad member Abdullah Al Mamun Lovelu stressed the importance of providing adequate support to restore normal life for those affected by Cyclone Remal.

Koira Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) BM Tariq-uz-Zaman assured that both public and private relief assistance has been extended to affected families. The government is committed to providing necessary support to the most severely affected individuals.
