Sylhet landslide: Three bodies recovered

The bodies of three family members who went missing after a hillock collapsed in the Chamelibagh area of Sylhet city have been recovered by an army rescue team.

The deceased are Karim Uddin, 31, his wife Shamima Akhter Rozi, 25, and their two-year-old child Tani.

Their bodies were recovered around 12:30pm on Monday following the landslide, which occurred around 6:30am.

Earlier, three injured people were rescued and admitted to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital.

The rescue operations were initially conducted by the fire service and cleaning staff of Sylhet City Corporation after receiving information about the incident.

Subsequently, the army was deployed to assist in the rescue efforts, according to an ISPR press release.

Several residents of the Chamelibagh area who participated in the rescue work reported that everyone was asleep at the time of the incident. Heavy rainfall in the morning caused a large part of the hillock to collapse onto a semi-pucca house, crushing Karim, his wife, and their child. The army later recovered their bodies.

The injured in this incident are Mahmud Uddin, Babul Uddin, Agha Bachchu Uddin, and Shafiq Uddin.

Jahangir Alam, councillor of Ward No. 35 of Sylhet City Corporation, said: "An army team began working at the site to search for three members of the same family who were crushed by the landslide. At one point, Karim's body was recovered along with those of his wife and child. The incident is very shocking.”

He added: "Two families were living in the collapsed house. Six members of these families were trapped under the rubble. The police, fire service, and we arrived on the scene and rescued three members of one family, sending them to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital.”

Shahparan police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Harunur Rashid Chowdhury confirmed that three members of the same family were buried under the house after the hillock collapsed due to rain. Their bodies have been recovered and sent to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital.
