Rana Dasgupta, general secretary of Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Oikya Parishad, said that It is now clear that the United States (US) imposed sanctions on former Army Chief General (retd) Aziz Ahmed and former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed for their misdeeds.
The role played has not only undermined the image of the government, but has also undermined the image of the entire state. It has also tarnished the image of the country’s law enforcement agencies, he said.
“Today, the people of the country can realize that the US imposed sanctions because of the misdeeds of some people (Benazir-Aziz) who carried out their duties in top positions of the state,” said the general secretary of the association.
“As we were not aware of the issues at the time of the sanctions, we thought that the US had taken an anti-Bangladesh role for a political purpose.”
He was speaking to the media after visiting the Savanna Eco Resort and Natural Park area of Gopalganj on Friday evening.
Rana Dasgupta also talked to the people of the affected minority community.
Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Oikya Parishad, a member organization of Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Oikya Parishad, has formed a fact-finding committee to look into matter of land being bought from Hindus in Madaripur and Gopalganj. The committee has already started taking reports, said the general secretary of the parishad.
Mentioning the reasons for the destruction of religious harmony, he said: "We think that land grabbing of religious ethnic minorities in Bangladesh has become a daily occurrence. And in the case of land grabs in this area, it is seen almost everywhere that those who are involved in this phenomenon are influential people of the state. Whenever a government comes to power, they are empowered by that government's power. They have misused this power to commit human rights violations in the lives of innocent and peaceful citizens.”
Referring to former army chief General Aziz, Rana Dasgupta said: “Although we do not know of any complaint against General Aziz regarding the occupation of lands belonging to the minority, the role that Benazir played as RAB DG and IGP has not only undermined the image of the government, but has also undermined the image of the entire state.”
