A case was filed early Friday over the murder of Chhatra League activist Ashraful Rahman Ijaz, who was shot dead allegedly by a rival group in Brahmanbaria on Wednesday.
The case was filed against 16 named and 10-12 unknown people following the complaint lodged by the victim's father, Aminur Rahman, with Sadar Model police station.
Former VP of Brahmanbaria Government College Jalal Hossain Khoka has been made the main accused while recently expelled Hasan Al-Farabi Joy, vice-president of the district Chhatra League unit, who shot the victim in public, was made the second accused.
Brahmanbaria Sadar Model police station Officer-in-Charge Md Aslam Hossain said on Friday morning that the victim's father filed the case as a plaintiff on Thursday night.
“An operation is underway to arrest the accused,” he added.
The other accused in the case are district Chhatra League vice-president Shafi Alam, 28, and his elder brother Sagar, 32, Shahadat Hossain alias Sunny, 28, Apu, 30, Mamun, 38, Masum, 40, Shahriar alias Laden, 22, Rubel, 28, Oli, 30, Ruman, 35, Taref, 30, Sourav, 30, Mamun, 28, Mursalin, 28.
Relatives of the victim Ashraful Rahman Ijaz said he was a supporter of the district Chhatra League Secretary and Chairman Shahadat Hossain Shuvon.
On Wednesday evening, after the news of chairman candidate Shuvon's victory in the upazila election, his supporters held a victory rally.
When the procession came to the College Para area of the town, Hasan Al Farabi Joy shot Ashraful Rahman Ijaz in the head on the orders of Jalal Uddin Khoka, a supporter of horse symbol candidate Md Helal Uddin.
Later, Ijaz was taken to the district sadar hospital where the on-duty doctor declared him dead. Locals said that there was a previous conflict between Hasan Al Farabi Joy, and the deceased Ashraful Rahman Ijaz.
Moreover, on Wednesday morning, there was an altercation between them at the polling station. The police said that this was the reason Joy shot Ijaz.
