A Jubo League leader was beaten to death as he allegedly attempted to rape a pregnant housewife in Chandina, Comilla, early Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Tanvir Ahmed Bhuiyan, 35, son of Babul Bhuiyan from Ganipur village in Barera Union. He was the Barera union Jubo League’s vice president.
The victim said on Wednesday at 2am, Tanvir entered her room and forcefully attempted to rape her. During this, a physical altercation between her husband and Tanvir took place. Her husband struck Tanvir, rendering him unconscious, eventually leading to his death.
On Wednesday morning, the police recovered the body from the scene. The housewife's husband was detained for questioning in connection with this incident.
Barera Union Parishad Chairman Ahsan Habib Bhuiyan said: "I also visited the scene. The murder is suspicious. The area is densely populated. It is impossible for the neighbours or people nearby not to know about the incident. No locals are speaking about the incident."
Chandina Model police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Sujon Dutta said: "There are injuries and cut marks on the body of the deceased Tanvir. However, the reason for the murder is not yet known. We have not been able to uncover any specific information about this matter. The accused was brought to the police station for questioning. Details will be provided after the investigation."
However, police sources said Tanvir was involved in several cases, including an arms case.
Tanvir’s mother, Nilufa Begum, said: "My son was murdered deliberately. What that woman is saying is not true at all. He had previously threatened to kill my son. He killed my son over a previous dispute. I demand justice for this murder."
