River erosion in Sariakandi as water level rises in Jamuna

River erosion has taken a serious turn in the Jamuna river of Bogra’s Sariakandi upazila as the water level of Jamuna River is rising due to incessant rain and water from upstream

The river erosion sparked fears among the people of low-lying areas. The erosion is taking place in the river due to strong current.

Officials of the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) have assured to take quick steps to prevent erosion.

The water in the river rose by 60 cm in the last 24 hours from Friday afternoon to Saturday afternoon. Water is flowing 4.83 cm below the danger mark.

Due to the increase of water in the river, erosion has started in some areas from Rouhadah to Ichamara in the Kamalpur union of the upazila.

Meanwhile, 50 metres collapsed in the Titur Mor area of Kamalpur Union. Besides, CC blocks and sand-laden geo bags have been washed away in the water, said local people.

If this situation continues, there is a possibility that about 500 families of Kamalpur village will be marooned due to the collapse of the flood control embankment.

Therefore, it is necessary to start work to prevent river erosion in areas subject to rapid deterioration, according to local people.

Nazmul Haque, the executive engineer of Bogra BWDB, said that the water level of the Jamuna river is increasing due to heavy rainfall upstream.

“By looking at the height of the water in the river on Sunday, it will be understood how long the water will rise. Riverbank protection work is already underway in the area affected by river erosion in Kamalpur Union. Measures will be taken to prevent rapid erosion in new areas where landslides have occurred," said the official.
