UP member in Jamalpur lands in jail over recovery of 40kg hemp

A union parishad member of Melandah upazila of Jamalpur has been sent to jail in connection with recovery of 40kg of hemp from his house. 

The accused UP member is Mohammad Belal Sheikh, 45 of Ward No 8 of Durmut union. 

A team of Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested the union parishad member along with the hemp from his house early Friday after conducting a raid. 

Kazi Shahnewaz Imon, officer-in-charge of Jamalpur DB police, said: “UP member Belal Sheikh had been operating a drug business for a long time. Acting on tip off, a raid was conducted at his house at 12:50am.”

“During the operation, 40kg of hemp was seized from two plastic bags in his living room, worth Tk80 lakh.”

Later, he was arrested.

A case was filed under the Narcotics Control Act at Melandah police station.

Later, he was produced before the court which sent him to jail, said the DB official.
