Heavy gusts and rains continue to batter Feni under the influence of Cyclone Remal, causing widespread power outages due to uprooted trees disrupting electricity connections. Around 300,000 rural electricity consumers in the district are currently without power.
Feni Palli Bidyut Samity GM Howladar Md Fazlur Rahman said that the storm has caused significant damage to the power infrastructure since Sunday night, leading to a complete power disconnection from 8am on Monday.
"Once the weather improves, efforts to restore the connection will commence," he added.
Authorities noted that electricity supply had been intermittent in the upazilas since Sunday night. While power remained stable in the district town until midnight, most connections were severed thereafter due to strong winds uprooting trees onto power lines.
Sonagazi and Chorchandia unions Chairman Mamunur Rashid Milan confirmed that several trees were uprooted by strong winds and rain, resulting in power disconnections.
Residents of Chorchandia village mentioned increased wind speeds since midnight but said that they were safe as of Monday noon. Although tidal waters rose slightly above normal levels, it did not inundate the locality.
Power Development Board Feni Executive Engineer ASM Rejaun Nabi mentioned that power transmission lines were damaged in various locations due to the strong winds, leaving more than 30,000 customers without electricity since 5am.
"Line repair work will begin once the rain subsides," he added.
According to Mohammad Moniruzzaman, a senior observer at the Feni Meteorological Department, 25mm of rain was recorded from 7am to 10am on Monday. Winds are currently blowing at speeds of 12-14km/h, and rain is expected to continue throughout Monday.
