Cyclone Remal: Nine dead across Bangladesh

At least nine people were killed in different parts of Bangladesh due to the impact of cyclone Remal, which now lies over Khulna-Satkhira on Monday.

In Bhola, a 55-year-old woman was killed around 4am when her house collapsed due to the heavy wind and rain on Monday.

The deceased has been identified as Maneja Khatun, a resident of Lalmohan upazila of the district.

Her husband, Abdul Kader, and her five-year-old grandchild managed to escape the house during the incident.

SM Mahbub-ul-Alam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Lalmohan Police Station, said: "We have received information that a woman died due to her house collapsing in the cyclone. We did not get any details yet.”

Besides, a child named Maisha, 4, died after being crushed by a tree inside her house due to Cyclone Remal in Daulatkhan. The incident took place around 4am, said Daulatkhan Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OF) Satya Ranjan Khaskel.

Meanwhile, since 9pm on Sunday, Bhola Sadar upazila has been plunged into darkness due to a power outage. Additionally, many residents have reported a complete loss of mobile network service.

In Satkhira, a 72-year-old man died while going to a shelter during a storm caused by cyclone Remal.

The deceased has been identified as Shawkat Ali Morol. He was a resident of Napitkhali village under Gabura union of the upazila.

Masudul Alam, chairman of Gabura Union Parishad said he stumbled on the road and suffered a heart attack around 7pm.

Cyclone Remal, which began making landfall on Bangladesh’s coast on Sunday night, has moved northwards inland and now lies over Khulna-Satkhira, according to the weather office.

In Barisal, two people were killed when the side wall of a four-storied building collapsed and fell on the neighbouring hotel in the Rupatali area of ​​the city during the cyclone.

The deceased are hotel owner Lokman Howladar and employee Moksedul. Another person, Shakib, is in critical condition. They are residents of the Rupatali area.

Mehdi Hasan, son of the hotel owner, said that around 3am, the wall collapsed from the top of the adjacent four-storied building and fell on the shop. His father and an employee were killed on the spot. Another employee was hospitalized in critical condition.

Locals said that the wall was built close to the building of Nurul Haque, a resident of Nalchity in Jhalakathi. Most of the wall collapsed on the shop during the cyclone.

Deputy Commissioner Shahidul Islam said that the two families will be given assistance from the government. At the same time, it will also be looked into whether there is any fault of the building owner.

Officer-in-charge of Barisal’s Kotwali Model Police Station Arisul Haque said that after receiving information, fire service members went to the spot and recovered two bodies and one injured.

In Patuakhali, on the same day in the afternoon, a person named Md Shariful Islam died while saving his sister from the flooded area due to Cyclone Remal in Kauwarchar area of ​​Dhulasar Union of Kalapara upazila in Patuakhali.

Besides, in Chittagong, a pedestrian named Saiful Islam Hriday died after being crushed by a wall in the textile area of ​​Bayezid police station in the city.

Again, one person died in Khulna's Batiaghata due to Cyclone Remal.

Khulna Additional Deputy Commissioner Md Nazmul Hussain Khan said that after staying at the shelter on Sunday night, Lal Chand Moral, 36, returned to his home in Batiaghata on the morning of May 27. Then he died after being crushed by a tree.

In Comilla, a student was killed when an under-construction building collapsed at his school. The accident happened around 11am on Monday.

The deceased is Saiful Islam Sagar, 10, son of Oli Hasan of Shaktala area of ​​the city.

Quoting witnesses, Inspector (Investigation) of Comilla's Sadar South Police Station Khademul Bahar said that the deceased student was a fifth grader of Noor Ideal School in Chowmuhani area of Naogaon.

Due to inclement weather, no students of grade five were present in the class except for him.

A seven-storey building next to the school was recently completed. Even though the building was completed, there was no security around it. The storm shook the building causing it to collapse on the school which was tin shed. So, it fell directly on that child in the classroom, killing him on the spot.

He said, a large part of the building collapsed. If there were more students in that classroom, a bigger incident could have happened.

Talking to the locals, it was reported that it was raining heavily during the storm. At this time, Hriday took shelter next to a wall. He was crushed to death when the wall suddenly collapsed. On receiving information, the fire service recovered his body.

Meteorologist Bazlur Rahman said on Monday morning that the cyclone's centre currently lies over Khulna-Satkhira and will take another 2-3 hours to fully pass.

The maximum sustained wind speed within 64km of the cyclone's centre is about 90kmph, with gusts rising to 120kmph, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) stated in its special bulletin No 18.
