Before the initial blow of Cyclone Remal, saltwater overflowed a dyke in Khulna's Koyra upazila, forcing almost 40,000 people to seek refuge in 116 shelters.
Tidal water was flooding the area, entering through 11 points, emergency repair work has been carried out at 24 more disaster-prone points, Koyra Upazila Nirabahi Officer Tarikuzzaman confirmed this information.
He said the emergency repair work started on the dangerous embankment in the morning. Twenty-four points were repaired throughout the day.
Immediate repair work was done at those points through the chairman and members of the union council. Low embankments are raised to prevent salinity from inundating the locality, he added.
He said the people of the disaster-prone areas are being asked to come to the shelters. They started arriving at the shelter after 2pm. Some people did not want to come to the shelter putting the livestock at risk.
So their livestock have also been brought to the shelter. Dry food has been provided to the people staying at the shelter. They are being provided full security and support, he added.
