A group of demonstrators blocked the Dhaka-Khulna highway for three hours to protest the lynching of two brothers by a mob in Panchpalli village of Dumain union in Madhukhali, Faridpur.
The protest started on Tuesday morning in the Madhukhali Dhumbagat Bazar area of Dhaka-Khulna highway.
Meanwhile, police dispatched several officers to disperse the protesters trying to block the road, resulting in at least 15 people getting injured, with the wounded being admitted to the hospital.
Earlier, at around 9am, thousands of protesters gathered at the Eidgah ground in the Baghata area to promote communal harmony. Under this initiative, agitators formed a human chain to demand justice for the killing of two brothers in Panchpalli. They intended to proceed towards the Panchpalli area of Dumain along the highway.
However, when they attempted to move towards Panchpalli, the police stopped them in the Bagan Bazar area, prompting them to take a stand there. By 9:30am, when they positioned themselves on the Dhaka-Khulna highway, traffic came to a halt on both sides.
Confrontations with the police ensued, leading to some individuals throwing objects, including trees, resulting in injuries.
Immediate details regarding the identities of those involved were not available.
Deputy Commissioner Md Kamrul Ahsan Talukder said that it would take time to restore order. The district administration, along with the police and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), are actively working to control the situation on-site.
Two construction workers, both siblings, were killed by a mob on suspicion that the duo set fire to a Hindu temple in Dumain Union under Faridpur's Madhukhali upazila on Thursday.
Five more workers sustained severe injuries in the mob attack. Two of them were hospitalized.
