In an unusual act of honesty, a Bangladeshi expatriate who had travelled by train without paying fare on several occasions, finally paid the debt after nearly two decades.
The expatriate, Manik Bhuiyan, 55, a resident of Brahmanbaria’s Akhaura upazila deposited Tk10,000 with the mobile ticket collector(TC) on Monday, thereby absolving himself of guilt that had been with him for a long time.
Booking officer Md Mohsin confirmed the matter and said, the authorities provided him the money receipt.
Relatives of Manik Bhuiyan said that since 1997, he has been living in Italy. Before going abroad, he used to trade aluminium in Boro bazaar. Recently returned home after performing Hajj.
During his business, he regularly travelled to various places including Brahmanbaria and Bhairab. However, out of regret, he paid Tk10,000 together. In his opinion, through this, he can be exempted to some extent.
Manik Bhuiyan did not agree to take a picture because he did not want any publicity. However, while depositing the money, he said that every time he boarded the train, he kept an account of the fare. It can be more or less than Tk10 thousand.
In this incident, the upazila residents appreciated his honesty. Netizens also posted about it on social media.
Rahmat Ullah Khan, a resident of RadhanagarCollegepara area and a bank officer said: “I know him personally. He could not have returned the railway money. If there is such a sense of responsibility among everyone, the country will progress further.”
