Cracks appeared in 200 houses due to earthquake, says probe report

The probe body formed by Petrobangla has concluded that the cracks in buildings in Bibiyana of Habiganj between February 1 to 3 were the result of earthquakes.

However, locals rejected the report terming it biased. They have also warned of launching an agitation protesting the report.

The convener of the committee, Mizanur Rahman, revealed the findings on Saturday.

However, there has been no earthquake in Sylhet region in the last two months, according to the USGS.

Earlier, cracks appeared in more than 200 houses in Nabiganj upazila of Habiganj—what locals claimed was due to the excess tremor in the Bibiyana gas field.

Locals said that there had been a loud sound and excess tremors three to four times daily in the Bibiyana gas field since February 1. Over 200 houses ruptured in the Inatganj and Dighalbak union.

Later, authorities formed a three-member body to probe the matter.

Mizanur Rahman, said that the report has been submitted to the chairman of Petrobangla.

"The incident that happened in Bibiana, was due to a natural earthquake. There is no human involvement here. Bibiana has undertaken the drilling of wells 27 and 28 as per their own plan. Of these, the drilling of well number 28 has already been completed. There is a plan to dig well number 27.”

Chalik Mia, chairman of Dighalbak Union Parishad, said that the information presented in the investigation report is not correct.

“We will protest against the report collectively. Apart from this, we want the help of the government to recover the compensation from Chevron for the damage caused to the common people,” he said.

It should be noted that Bibiana gas field is located in Karimpur of Inatganj Union of Nabiganj Upazila. It is funded by the US-based company Chevron.
