Gaibandha road crash: Driver of BGB patrol vehicle dies

The driver of a Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) patrol vehicle (pickup), who was injured in a collision with a passenger bus, died while undergoing treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital on Friday afternoon.

The deceased has been identified as Munna Mia, 20. He was a resident of the Mathehat area in Betkapa Union of Palashbari upazila. 

He was driving a pickup requisitioned for election patrolling.

Assistant Police Superintendent (C-Circle) of Gaibandha, Uday Kumar Saha, confirmed the incident and said: “Munna Mia's body was handed over to his relatives. Five injured BGB members are undergoing treatment at Rangpur CMH Hospital. Additionally, two other injured bus passengers are receiving treatment at Palashbari Upazila Health Complex.”

He further said: “A speeding passenger bus, while trying to overtake an autorickshaw, collided head-on with the BGB members' pickup. Both the damaged bus and pickup have been recovered. A case is being processed at Palashbari police station regarding this incident.”

Earlier, around 11am, on the Gaibandha-Palashbari road near the Rice Mill area, a head-on collision occurred between a JR Transport bus and a BGB patrol vehicle (pickup) coming from the opposite direction. 

The front of the bus was severely damaged, and the pickup was completely wrecked. The collision injured two bus passengers and five BGB members, including the pickup driver.

Upon receiving the news, police and fire service personnel rescued the injured and initially admitted them to Palashbari Upazila Health Complex. 

Later, the BGB members were moved to Rangpur CMH Hospital, and the pickup driver, Munna, was admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
