The Election Inquiry Committee has served a show-cause notice to a police officer accused of campaigning for his wife, an independent candidate in the Bogra-1 constituency.
Bogra Joint District and Sessions Judge Shahnaz Parvin on Wednesday issued the notice and asked to explain his position in person or send a representative to the inquiry committee’s temporary office at 3:30pm on Thursday.
The notice says a news report revealed that Hamidul Haque Milon, an additional DIG in Barisal Metropolitan Police, is campaigning for his wife, Shahazadi Alam Lipi, an independent candidate in Bogra-1 constituency.
On a month's leave from his government job, he is accused of misusing his power and a government vehicle for campaigning, disrupting the electoral process. His behaviour is considered both professional misconduct and a violation of the electoral code of conduct.
Incumbent MP and Awami League candidate for Bogra-1 constituency Shahdara Mannan, filed a written complaint on December 24.
She said: "The husband of independent candidate Shahazadi Alam Lipi, Hamidul Alam Milon, who enjoys government privileges and is the Additional Commissioner (Crime and Operations) of Barisal Metropolitan Police, is influencing voters on her behalf knowing she is likely to lose the election. He is continuously using his power, which violation of the electoral code of conduct."
