Two missing Bogra BNP leaders return home days after High Court ruling

Two missing BNP leaders of Bogra have returned to their respective homes in Kahaloo upazila of the district two days after the High Court issued a ruling seeking information on their whereabouts.

However, the two–Anwar Hossain Hriday, assistant office secretary of the BNP’s Kahaloo unit, and Delwar Hossain, general secretary of the party’s Birkedar union unit, did not say anything about where they were for the last 14 days.

Hriday returned on Thursday morning and Delwar at night.

Salim Reza, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kahaloo police station, said they only heard about Hriday returning home.

Meanwhile, Sherpur police station OC Rezaul Karim Reza said Hriday was asked to come to the station but did not.

Their family members said the two BNP leaders refused to say anything about their disappearance.

Former member of parliament from Bogra-4 (Kahaloo-Nandigram) and Bogra BNP Joint General Secretary Musharraf Hossain claimed law enforcement got them on a Bogra-bound bus from Dhaka on Wednesday night.

It would have been difficult to get them back without a writ in the High Court, he said. “Due to fear of police harassment, they have moved away from home now.”

Delwar’s son, Sakhawat Hossain, said his father’s phone was turned on on Wednesday night and they spoke soon after.

He added that he returned home on Thursday to meet his mother and left home afterwards.

The High Court on Wednesday ordered the inspector general of police (IGP) to inform it about the whereabouts of the two missing BNP leaders on January 4.

The court issued a rule seeking an explanation as to why the inaction by the authorities concerned to produce the BNP leaders before the court will not be declared illegal.

The IGP was asked to submit a report on the update of the missing BNP leaders on January 4.

They went missing on December 14.

Earlier on Tuesday, lawyer Kaisar Kalam, on behalf of their families, submitted a writ petition with the court.

The families alleged that some people posing as members of the DB picked up Anwar on his way to attend an event at the Bangladesh Rural Development Board at 5pm on December 14.

Later, he was taken to the district’s Dupchanchia Upazila and asked to call Delwar from his mobile phone. Responding to the call he went there and both of them remained missing since then.

Though the families communicated with law enforcers and filed two general diaries, no progress was noticed in this connection before the submission of the petitions.

Finally, they submitted the writ petitions with the High Court on Tuesday, seeking intervention.
