One person was detained while smuggling octane to Myanmar in Cox’s Bazar’s Tekhnaf Tuesday night.
The arrestee is Md Harun, a resident of South Dailpara of Sadar Union in Teknaf.
At the same time, 1,500 litres of the fuel oil were seized.
Teknaf Model police station Officer-in-charge (OC) Muhammad Osman Gani on Wednesday said that the man was detained with oil from Marine Drive of Teknaf on Tuesday night.
The OC said: "Police raided Marine Drive on the report of octane oil being smuggled to Myanmar by boat from Teknaf. A smuggler was detained while trying to escape. Besides, two boats used for smuggling were seized.”
Local fisherman Noor Alam commented on the situation, adding: "When internal conflict erupted in Myanmar, smugglers became active in trafficking various goods, including daily essentials. Additionally, Shamsu Majhi, a member of a long-standing gang, and individuals like Zafar, Abdur Rahman, and Shafi Alam, alias Barmaya Shafi, have been consistently involved in smuggling operations to Myanmar via Marine Drive. Recently, a member of that gang was detained while attempting to smuggle oil into Myanmar."
