PM travels to Tungipara in personal jeep without flag

In line with the electoral code of conduct, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina travelled to her constituency, Tungipara in Gopalganj, from Dhaka in her personal jeep with limited convoy on Thursday.

The bulletproof Mercedes Benz jeep that she boarded did not carry the national flag since she went to Tungipara on a personal tour.

The premier’s official cars include a Mercedes-Maybach S600 Guard, BMW 7 series and Armored G Wagon.

This time, she did not use any government vehicle since it is prohibited by the Election Commission.

On November 15, the EC announced the schedule of the 12th parliamentary elections. As per the code of conduct for political parties and candidates, the ministers and lawmakers cannot enjoy any government benefits in election work. They cannot use government vehicles, too.

Sheikh Hasina, also the president of the ruling Awami League, will contest the January 7 election from Gopalganj-3 constituency (Kotalipara-Tungipara).

Until 2018, Sheikh Hasina was elected member of parliament six times from the seat.

On her arrival in Tungipara via Padma Bridge, Sheikh Hasina paid rich tributes to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and offered prayers at the mausoleum.

She placed a wreath and joined a prayer, seeking eternal peace for the departed souls of Bangabandhu and other martyrs of the August 15, 1975 carnage.

After laying the wreath, she stood in solemn silence for some time to show profound respect to the memory of the architect of independent Bangladesh.

Later, Sheikh Hasina attended a party meeting in the evening at the Tungipara Upazila unit office, where she asked all to carry out the election campaign in compliance with the election code of conduct.

On Friday morning, she met with party leaders and workers at Tungipara and Kotalipara Upazila Awami League offices.
