Unidentified robbers early on Friday killed a security guard at Chaprashirhat West Bazar market in Kabirhat upazila of Noakhali before stealing gold ornaments worth around Tk3 crore.
The deceased was Shahid Ullah, 50, hailing from Char Gullakhali village of Dhanshalik union of the same upazila.
The owner of Ma-Moni Jewellers, one of the robbed stores, Mintu Chandra Nath, said at around 3am, a group of 40 to 50 robbers arrived at the market on a pickup.
They broke into his shop and forced their way into its locker to steal 250 bhoris of gold, 150 bhoris of silver and Tk2.5 lakh in cash, Mintu said.
Meanwhile, Noor Alam, the owner of M/s Noor Jewellers, said seven bhoris of gold and 250 bhoris of silver were taken from his shop.
According to locals, when the guard realized what was happening, he tried to stop the robbers. But his attempts went in vain as he bled to death after the robbers struck him in the head.
Kabirhat police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rafiqul Islam said the police recovered the body and sent it to the Noakhali General Hospital morgue for autopsy. Legal action is being taken in this regard.
