57 Rohingyas rescued at sea, 4 traffickers held

Law enforcers have rescued 57 Rohingyas, who had sailed for Malaysia by sea, and detained four members of a human trafficking ring, including its leader.

The detainees were identified as Md Yasin, 23, Md Jubayer, 35, Nazir Hossen, 61, and Ramimul Islam, 31.

Md Osman Gani, officer-in-charge (OC) at Teknaf police station confirmed the matter on Saturday.

He said during the operation late Friday a total of 58 people, mostly women and children, headed to Malaysia were rescued, 57 of whom were Rohingyas and the other a Bangladeshi national.

Those rescued, told Dhaka Tribune that a middleman from Noyapara Rohingya camp was sending them to Malaysia in exchange for Tk4 lakh. 

OC Osman Gani said there are human trafficking cases filed against three of the four arrestees.

Mohammad Rafiqul Islam, superintendent of police (admin) in Cox’s Bazar, told Dhaka Tribune that legal actions will be taken against the culprits in this regard.
