Cyclone Midhili: 700 stranded tourists return from Saint Martin’s Island

As many as 700 tourists, who were stranded on Saint Martin’s Island and Teknaf due to Cyclone Midhili for two days, have returned. 

Tourist ships started plying the Teknaf-Saint Martin’s Island waterway on Saturday morning as the impact of the cyclone passed, Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Adnan Chowdhury.

Zahir Uddin Bhuiyan, the traffic supervisor at the Teknaf office of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), said: "Ship operations have recommenced since Saturday morning. Both the Bar Aulia and Kairi Sindbad ships departed from Teknaf to Saint Martin’s, transporting tourists who were staying on the island.”

The periphery of the cyclonic storm Midhili crossed the Mongla-Payra coast near Khepupara as of Friday noon, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

Cyclone Midhili completed crossing the coast by the evening, it said.
