Police on Monday detained four people in connection with the murder of a Jubo League leader in Gaibandha’s Sundarganj.
After the incident was reported, the police raided several areas and detained the four people, said Officer-in-Charge (OC) KM Azmiruzzaman of Sundarganj police station.
The OC said the detainees are active members of BNP-Jamaat. However, due to the ongoing investigation, the names cannot be revealed.
The victim's family is preparing to file a case, the OC added.
On Sunday night, a Jubo League leader was hacked to death by BNP-Jamaat men in Gaibandha's Sundarganj.
The deceased was identified as Zahidul Islam, 38, the president of the Sonora Union Awami Jubo League.
Another man named Kabir Mia, 35, was also injured in the incident.
The incident took place at around 11:30pm on Sunday, when Zahidul was on a motorcycle with Kabir.
When they reached the local Mara Bridge, some seven to eight people stopped the motorcycle and stabbed Zahidul multiple times. They also cut the veins on his hands and legs. Kabir was attacked with a stick and received severe injuries.
Locals took both of them to Rangpur Medical College Hospital where Zahidul identified some of the attackers. They are - Musa, Samu, Imtiaz, and Khademul, members of the local BNP-Jamaat.
Zahidul Islam died at the hospital at around 3:45am on Monday due to excessive bleeding.
In this regard, Sundarganj upazila Awami League General Secretary Md Ashraful Alam Sarkar Lebu said the incident was planned. “The BNP-Jamaat men attacked Zahidul and brutally killed him.”
He demanded that those involved in the murder be arrested immediately and brought to book.
