At least two buses were torched in Gazipur on Monday, the second day of BNP-Jamaat’s nationwide blockade.
A “KP Paribahan” bus was set on fire in Kaliakair upazila’s Dhaka-Tangail highway at around 4am. The bus was carrying RMG factory workers.
The bus driver, Habibur Rahman, said some four to five miscreants got on his bus, and set the vehicle on fire after pouring petrol.
The garment workers and the driver managed to get off the bus immediately. No casualties were reported.
Iftekhar Raihan, station officer of Kaliakair Fire Service and Civil Defene, said a unit reached the spot and brought the fire under control. However, most of the inside and front parts of the bus were burnt.
Earlier, at 2am, a “Gazipur Paribahan” bus was set on fire near the Shibbari-Shimultoli road under the Gazipur Metropolitan police station.
Deputy Assistant Director of Gazipur Fire Service and Civil Defence Abdullah Al Arefin on receiving the information, two units of Joydebpur fire service reached the spot and brought the blaze under control.
Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ziaul Islam they are investigating who set the fire on the buses.
