Daffodil International University has announced a 10-day holiday considering the safety of the students as a clash broke out between them and the locals on Sunday night.
The students have been asked to leave the university hall as soon as possible.
After a clash between the university students and locals in Ashulia's Changaon area on Sunday night, a tense situation is prevailing on Monday morning.
Several students were seen leaving the residential halls of the Daffodil International University.
Tanvir Tahmid, a student of the university’s CSE department, said: "Locals attacked the students last night. They attacked our residential hall and vandalized it. This has raised concerns for the safety of the students.”
Considering this, the authorities have declared a university holiday. The campus will be closed from Monday to November 16, he added.
Ashulia police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Farhad Bin Karim said the situation in the area is normal. “I've heard of the closure of the campus. However, we are staying in the area to ensure security.”
On Sunday night, at least three people were injured as the university students clashed with the locals in the Changaon area.
The locals vandalized the academic building on the campus and threw brickbats at the students.
One of the injured students was treated at Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar. The rest were given first aid at the university's medical center.
According to locals and students, a student of the textile engineering department (4th year) of the university Hasibul Islam alias Antar, 22, was beaten to death by some local youths recently.
On Sunday, the students of the university formed a human chain on the road adjacent to the campus, demanding that all those involved in the murder of Antar be brought to book.
During this time, the students closed several shops in the Changaon area, and this angered the locals. The students also blocked some roads.
Later, the students made four to five demands, including the establishment of a police box, to ensure the safety of students to the university authorities.
The vice chancellor of the university assured that the demands of the students would be met.
However, when the students heard about locals taking positions in front of a hall of the university, a clash broke out between the parties.
The students later set fire to a local road, and several shops in the area.
Shahriar Sumon, president of the Traders Association of Changao Molla Market, said the students had vandalized and looted over 70 shops.
At least four shops were set on fire, he added.
