3-day BNP blockade: 29 BNP leaders, activists arrested in Barisal

Police have so far arrested 29 BNP leaders and activists, including two former MPs and some prominent party figures, during the blockade in Barisal.

During the last day of the three-day BNP blockade in Barisal on Thursday, party leaders and activists held spontaneous processions in various parts of the city, resulting in the vandalism of several vehicles, including a bus.

Several vehicles were vandalized in the area adjacent to Shaheed Abdur Rab Serniabat alias Dapadapiya bridge in the city on Thursday afternoon.

The incident reportedly stemmed from a procession led by metropolitan BNP Joint Convener Zia Uddin Sikder.

Barisal-Kuakata inter-highway traffic was halted for about an hour until police arrived and restored normal traffic flow.

Meanwhile, the city's bus terminals and launch station experienced a shortage of passengers. Many buses and launches had to cancel their journeys due to insufficient passengers. Rickshaw services within the city remained unaffected, but privately owned vehicles were off the roads.

A substantial police and Ansar presence was observed at vital points in the city, including bus terminals and launch ghats. RAB and BGB personnel were also on patrol.

Barisal Metropolitan Police's Additional Deputy Commissioner Fazlul Karim assured that all necessary measures had been taken to maintain law and order.
