On the third day of the blockade called by the BNP, the protesters vandalized a covered van and a truck loaded with cotton and set it on fire on the Asian Highway in Narayanganj.
Police rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control and detained four people. The incident took place in the Kushab area of Rupganj upazila on Thursday morning.
The identities of the detainees were not revealed immediately.
According to police and local sources, 40-50 activists led by the former vice-presidents of the District Chhatra Dal unit, Sultan Mahmud, and Masudur Rahman, stopped a covered van and set it on fire.
Later, they vandalized another wood-loaded truck and set it on fire as well.
After receiving the information, the police went to the spot. At that time, the activists threw bricks at the police.
Police fired shotguns to disperse the agitators. Several people were injured at that time. However, their names are not known.
Confirming the matter, District Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Abir Hossain said: “In the morning, a group of 40-50 people blocked the road and vandalized a cotton-laden pickup van and a truck and set them on fire. At that time, the police dispersed them by shooting at them.”
Superintendent of Police (SP) Golam Mostafa Russell said traffic movement was normal on the third day of the blockade.
“However, some isolated incidents occurred in Rupganj and Siddhirganj of Narayanganj today (Thursday). Blockadeers set fire to a covered van in Rupganj. At that time, the police arrested four people from the spot. Apart from this, they tried to vandalize a car in Siddhirganj. At that time the police went and arrested three people,” he added.
