Karnaphuli Tunnel authorities crack down on speedsters

Authorities have identified seven cars racing past the speed limit inside the newly opened Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel, or Karnaphuli Tunnel, and filed a case against their drivers, who have yet to be identified.

Md Jahangir Alam, assistant manager of the tunnel authority, filed the case late at Karnafuli police station on Wednesday mentioning the licence numbers of the seven cars.

Two-three car drivers and their accomplices were also accused in the case.

According to the case statement, at about midnight on Sunday, the day the tunnel was opened for traffic, several people with their accomplices in 7-10 cars violated the 60kmph speed limit set for the tunnel, disrupting traffic movement inside it by partaking in racing, overtaking other vehicles and overall driving recklessly.

The tunnel authorities identified could make out the licence plates of seven cars by analyzing CCTV footage.

According to sources, some adolescent boys took part in the dangerous activity in their expensive sports cars, videos of which went viral on social media the next day.

Apparently a Facebook page named The Slow Kids uploaded a video of the race, comparing it to the “Fast and Furious” movies.

Karnafuli police station OC Md Jahir Hossain confirmed the filing of the case, adding that those involved in the incident would face legal action.
