A BNP leader was injured in the attack on the protest march taken out in support of the movement to bring down the government by blocking the roads, railways and waterways across the country.
The injured was identified as Faridpur District BNP Member Secretary AK Kibria Swapan.
District BNP Convener Advocate Modares Ali Issa confirmed the matter.
The incident took place near Komarpur Bahirdia Bridge on Dhaka-Khulna highway around 11am on Wednesday.
The district BNP convener said: "We blocked the Dhaka-Khulna highway near Bahirdia Bridge in support of the blockade on Wednesday afternoon. During the protest, individuals from Swechchhasebak League, Jubo League, and Chhatra League armed with sticks attacked private cars and motorcycles. When our leaders and activists resisted, a shotgun was fired, injuring BNP leader Swapan. Rakib, one of our workers, was also hurt in the shooting.
“Swapan is receiving treatment under special arrangements for security reasons, not at the hospital. Some other activists were injured too, and they received first aid," he added.
He further said: “I strongly condemn the fascist behaviour of the government with such a terrorist group. We will overthrow this government and bring these terrorists to justice through the ongoing movement.”
Faridpur Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge MA Jalil said: "I am not aware of any picketing or firing incident in Komarpur Bahirdia area of Faridpur. It is also unclear if BNP has a blockade program there."
