Some 49 fishermen were sentenced to jail in different terms in Barisal division in the last 24 hours till Friday for violating the ban on catching, selling, hoarding, and transporting ilish fish.
They were also fined a total of Tk35,000.
With them, a total of 268 fishermen had been imprisoned in various terms.
Apart from that, a total of Tk2.56 lakh was realized from them as fines in 287 cases in the operation conducted in the last eight days.
Mohammad Nasir Uddin, assistant director of the local fisheries department, confirmed the matter on Friday.
According to the information available from the divisional fisheries office, a total of 903 raids were conducted and 344 mobile courts were operated in the Barisal division from October 12 to Friday.
The government imposed a 22-day ban on ilish fishing from October 12.
Catching, selling and transportation of ilish is prohibited during the period to ensure the safe spawning of the national fish of Bangladesh during its peak breeding period.
The ban will remain in place till November 2.
