Empowered women entrepreneurs shine along the Brahmaputra riverbanks

A multitude of offerings graced the stalls at this gathering of entrepreneurial women along the banks of the Brahmaputra River in Mymensingh.

Among the treasures on display were an assortment of meticulously crafted cane products, intricately designed clothing, and bed linens. Delectable food products and charming dolls also found their place among the exhibits, reads a press release issued on Monday.

Notably, one entrepreneur introduced a rather unique creation in the form of wigs. Behind each stall in this bustling fair lay the story of a resilient woman determined to carve her path to success.

A vibrant display of entrepreneurial spirit unfolded at the "Festival of Enterprise", which commenced at 11am on Monday.

The event was inaugurated by Ommey Salma Tanzia, divisional commissioner, Mymensingh, and took place at the Boishakhi Mancha in Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin Park.

Brac is the driving force behind this initiative, aiming to fostering female entrepreneurship by providing a platform for direct product showcase and sales.

Brac representatives will be available at the event, offering information on a diverse range of products and addressing queries related to the Brac’s microfinance program.

Addressing the gathering, Ommey Salma Tanzia, the chief guest, emphasized the pivotal role of financial empowerment for women.

She stressed that when women possess economic resources, they utilize them for the betterment of family health and education, thereby contributing to the foundation of a robust, educated society.

In her remarks, Nazneen Sultana, deputy director, Department of Women Affairs, Mymensingh, highlighted the profound impact of women's economic independence on their families.

She encouraged women to step forward in various capacities, asserting that self-reliance leads to familial prosperity.

Moreover, Nazneen Sultana urged women to seek support when needed, especially in times of adversity, underscoring the crucial guidance offered by institutions like the Directorate of Women's Affairs and Brac.

Following the inaugural ceremony, guests explored the stalls, each of which told a unique story of determination and innovation.

Notable among them was Mosammat Bilkis Khatun, who embarked on a journey of wig-making expertise eleven years ago.

Now, she oversees Taslima Hair Park alongside her husband, employing nearly a thousand individuals in Nalitabari of Sherpur.

Bilkis remains actively involved in quality control, ensuring excellence throughout the production process.

Together with her husband, she manages operations beyond their local base, distributing wigs to partners in Dhaka before they find their way to international markets.

Rokshana Parveen from Jamalpur, discovered her passion for handicrafts a year ago when her husband faced a cancer diagnosis.

She initiated her venture with support from Brac, a decision her late husband ultimately endorsed, understanding the financial security it would provide in the wake of his passing.

Over the past 12 years, Rokshana has established a showroom in Jamalpur city, offering an array of exquisite products including Nakshikatha, Naksha bed sheets, and Naksha clothing, all created by a dedicated team of artisans.

The "Festival of Enterprise" stands as a testament to the determination and creativity of these women, illustrating how entrepreneurship can serve as a powerful tool for empowerment and self-sufficiency.

From Brac's perspective, the primary goal of this event is to facilitate direct sales from female entrepreneurs to customers.

It is also anticipated that entrepreneurs will gain invaluable insights into market demands for their products.

Through Brac's microfinance program, women are not only gaining financial independence but also becoming self-reliant.

Brac firmly believes that by providing women with more opportunities, they will be better equipped to contribute substantially to the economic growth of the nation.

The pivotal role played by female entrepreneurs in bolstering the country's economic landscape cannot be overstated.

Brac's microfinance program, which has already organized over 5.5 million female entrepreneurs and members, continues to be a linchpin in the development of small and medium-scale industries nationwide.
