Four community eye centres bring joy to Moulvibazar people

The inauguration of four community eye centres has brought happiness among people of Moulvibazar district. 

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday inaugurated 65 community eye centres in 65 upazila health complexes in 28 districts of seven divisions of the country.

Among these, four centres were officially inaugurated in Sreemangal, Kamalganj, Kulaura and Barlekha upazila health complexes. 

The people of Moulvibazar have expressed their joy to receive the services of the centres.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced the inauguration of community eye centres established in these upazila health complexes through video conference from Dhaka Ganabhaban.

The program was held at Sreemangal Zila Parishad Auditorium in Moulvibazar at 11:40am.

Two beneficiaries Jahanara Begum and Birendra Deb spoke directly to the prime minister from Moulvibazar at the inauguration session conducted by Upazila Nirbahi Officer Ali Rajib Mahmud Mithun.

Jahanara Begum said that once she could not see with her eyes. She used to run her family by sewing. But she could do sewing work for three years. She could not see anything close.

“I went to Sreemangal health complex and got free eye surgery there. They gave me glasses, eye drops. Now I am healthy. I can sew now..I can read the Quran. I will pray for the prime minister reading the Quran so that you can become the prime minister again.”

This is how Jahanara Begum of Muslimbagh area of Kalighat road in Sreemangal shared her joy with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The prime minister was listening to Jahanara Begum through a virtual video conference.

Another beneficiary Birendra Deb of Sabujbagh area of Sadar union also spoke to the prime minister virtually.

He said that he received eye injuries in an accident during work. 

“I became blind due to cataracts after the accident. But Sreemangal Upazila Health Complex did my eye surgery at free of cost. I am healthy now. I can see with my eyes.”

At this time, the prime minister ordered the local administration to arrange a job for Birendra Dev.

The centres will facilitate people to take eye care services at the grassroots.The centres were launched as part of the current government's move to set up it at every upazila across the country.
