Student tortured by Chhatra League activists at Barisal University

A student endured torture all night allegedly by activists associated with the Bangladesh Chhatra League at the Bangabandhu Hall of Barisal University.

The Chhatra League activists are also accused of breaking the student's arm. His left hand was fractured due to their beating with a pipe.

Mukul Ahmed, a fourth-year student of the English Department was reportedly tortured at the hands of Tanjid Manju and Shahab Uddin.

The incident unfolded on Thursday night in room 4018 of the Bangabandhu Hall. The next morning, Mukul was rushed to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital.

Mukul hails from Narsingdi Sadar. He is the son of a carpenter and manages his own and his sister's education expenses through private tutoring.

Mukul said he stumbled upon some first-year students from the English Department on his way back to the dormitory late at night. They told him that the senior students from the Bangabandhu Hall were looking for him. Mukul, unfamiliar with the reason behind this, was aware of previous ragging incidents and reported them to the department's teachers, who had taken measures to ensure his safety.

Mukul received a message from Tanjid through a messenger group on Thursday evening, stating that they could not guarantee his safety.

Subsequently, Manju and Shahab took Mukul to the 4018 room and physically assaulted him, using sticks.

After an attempt to break his hands, they abandoned the injured student and locked the door from the outside.

Injured Mukul said: “I am not involved with any politics as I came to the university to fulfil my parents' dreams, but now I am going to be crippled. What answer will I give to the family?”

Dr Mohammad Nahid, an orthopaedic specialist at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital confirmed that Mukul had sustained fractures in his left hand. He received the necessary medical treatment, and the bandages will be removed after 21 days.

Barisal University Provost Arif Hossain said: "I am not aware of the incident of beating the student. The security guard of the hall informed me that no such incident has been reported in this hall. Mukul may be injured in an accident.”

Proctor Mohammad Khurshid Alam said: “I have been informed that a student of Bangabandhu Hall has been beaten up. The details of the incident have also been investigated. The provost also went to the hospital to see the student.”
