Indian soldier’s body found in Teesta handed over to BSF

The body of an Indian Army soldier, found floating in the Teesta River after severe damage to the Chungthang Dam in Sikkim, India, was recovered by local residents and the police from Kichamat Chhatnai Char of Dimla upazila in Nilphamari.

Dimla police station Officer-in-charge (OC) Laisur Rahman confirmed the incident.

Due to the dam breach and continuous rains, over 50 soldiers from the Indian Army went missing. The rising upstream water levels drastically flooded regions in Bangladesh, including Nilphamari and Rangpur districts, affecting hundreds of villages along the Teesta River and Char areas.

Residents of Kisamat Chatnai Durgum Char in Khagakhribari union, Dimla upazila, reported the body floating in the Teesta River on Thursday.

As the location was close to the Indian border, the police informed the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), who in turn contacted the Indian Border Security Force (BSF).

A joint team of BGB and BSF confirmed the body's identity as an Indian Army personnel.

Sagnaya Kumar Das, company commander of BSF, informed the police that due to the dam breach and rapid water flow, numerous army personnel went missing. The BGB handed over the soldier's body to the BSF through a flag meeting on Thursday afternoon. However, the soldier's identity was not immediately disclosed.
