Traditional boat race events were held on the occasion of Vishwakarma Puja by the Hindu community at three places in Gopalganj on Monday
Vishwakarma Puja is celebrated every year to mark the birth anniversary of the Hindu God Lord Vishwakarma, who is known as the “architect of gods”.
Different groups of boatmen from different districts with over 100 boats took part in the competition in Kaliganj of Kotalipara Upazila. The race was held on a 2km-long area in Babur Khal from Kaliganj Bazar to Khejurbari. A traditional fair was also organized on the occasion. Thousands of men and women joined the crowd and enjoyed the thrilling race.
Kalabari Upazila Chairman Advocate Bijon Biswas told Dhaka Tribune that traditionally, boatmen used to carry paddy to local landlords, and while returning home, they used to race among themselves. That is how this traditional race began.
Interestingly, no one organizes the race. Hundreds of boatmen come to the Babur Khal every year during the Vishwakarma Puja. This year, only ten boats were allowed to participate in the race.
A local school teacher, Nanda Lal Biswas, told this reporter that the race has been going on for years just to entertain the people.
Another local, Prasanta Mandal, said how the occasion brings relatives and neighbours to their houses.
“Our relatives come and visit us every year just so they can witness the boat race. We cook delicious food and enjoy the race together,” he added.
