Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have detained two individuals following a raid on an illegal weapons manufacturing facility in Sitakunda's Pathorighona area in Chittagong.
During the operation, law enforcement officials seized three firearms and equipment used for weapon production from the factory.
The detainees were identified as Md Jahangir Alam, 39, son of Nurul Alam, and Md Emon, 24, son of Md Yusuf. Both individuals are residents of Sitakunda's Chinnamul area.
The raid was conducted on Tuesday morning, Senior RAB-7 Assistant Director Tapas Karmakar said.
He said: "We conducted a raid after receiving information about firearms manufacturing and sales at Jahangir Alam's Garden residence (Bagan Bari) in the remote hilly area of Pathorighona. This operation led to the detention of Jahangir and Emon."
"Inside a tin shed on the premises, authorities discovered three newly created local firearms, a large machete, and several tools utilized for weapon production," he added.
Further interrogation of the detained individuals revealed their involvement in the illegal sale of domestically produced firearms to local pirates, drug traffickers, and gang members over an extended period.
The suspects admitted to engaging in weapon production for 7-8 years, occasionally employing the facade of farming to evade the attention of law enforcement agencies and others.
The detained individuals have also been linked to a total of eight cases registered against Md Jahangir Alam at the Sitakunda police station, including charges related to firearms, explosives, special powers, robbery preparation, and drug trafficking.
The arrested individuals have been transferred to the respective police stations to facilitate further legal proceedings, the RAB official said.
