Four Chhatra League leaders suspended for mourning Sayedee's death in Barisal

Four leaders of Barisal’s Wazirpur Upazila Chhatra League unit were suspended from the organization for mourning the death of convicted war criminal and Jamaat leader Delawar Hossain Sayedee on social media.

The expelled leaders posted on their personal Facebook accounts.

A request has been made to permanently expel the four leaders from the organization.

The expelled leaders are Bamrail Union Chhatra League General Secretary Mehdi Hasan Shanto, Bamrail Union Chhatra League member Said Fakir, Guthia Union Chhatra League organizing secretary Raju Howlader, Guthia Ideal College Chhatra League president Taijul Islam under Wazirpur upazila.

On Sunday afternoon, Wazirpur Upazila Chhatra League President Asim Gharami said: “The decision was made following an emergency meeting of Upazila Chhatra League on Saturday.”

However, he did not provide specific reasons for their temporary expulsion.

“They were expelled due to their involvement in activities against the organization. Recommendations have also been sent to the District Chhatra League for additional steps,” Upazila Chhatra League Secretary Mahmud Shaon said.

According to Upazila Chhatra League sources, the four suspended members shared a news post on Facebook with Sayedee's photos. Following this, other leaders and activists requested their expulsion by showing screenshots of the posts to organizational leaders, citing objectionable content that went against the organization's values.

The source said the suspended leaders removed the post one day after it was posted.

Suspended Chhatra Leauge leader Mehdi Hasan Shanto said: “On August 14, BNP-Jamaat-e-Islami leaders accused the Awami League and the government of being responsible for the death of Delawar Hossain Sayedee. They also disseminated false information through various means.”

"Knowing the truth, I posted on Facebook using my Facebook account that Sayedee passed away due to a heart attack. Later, I apologized to both the Upazila Chhatra League and the party leaders. However, they still suspended me from the organization," he added.

“All my family members are devoted to the Awami League. I am committed to remaining an Awami League activist for as long as I live," he further said.
