20,000 people marooned as Teesta flows 20cm above danger level

The water level of the Teesta River has increased drastically due to incessant rains and some 20,000 residents of 30 villages have been marooned. 

The water level of the river is flowing 20cm above the danger level at Dalia Barrage point on Monday, according to the local Bangladesh Water Development Board.

Meanwhile, water started flowing at high speed as all the gates of Gajoldoba Teesta Barrage were opened on Sunday night. 

Apart from that, all 44 gates of the Teesta Barrage in Bangladesh have been opened due to the rising water level.

Robiul Islam, executive engineer of the Bangladesh Water Development Board said that people living in remote char areas have been asked to stay in shelters as the water level of Teesta River may rise further.

Gangachara Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Nahid Tamanna said that the river water is entering the remote, char areas of Gangachara upazila. 

Many areas can be hit by floods by Monday afternoon, the UNO said.
