BNP-police clash: Over 200 sued in Bogra, 2 leaders arrested

Police filed three separate cases against 200 named BNP leaders and activists on Tuesday in connection with alleged attacks on police establishments during the party's march in Bogra earlier in the day.

Bogra Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge Saihan Oliullah confirmed the matter.

Late at night, the police arrested Bogra BNP General Secretary Ali Ajgar Talukdar Hena and former convener of Bogra Swechasebak Dal ABM Majedur Rahman Jewel, both of whom had led the march.

Tensions erupted as BNP leaders attempted to lead a march from Yakubia High Girls School towards Satmatha on Tuesday. Police intervention led to clashes, with BNP activists and others attacking law enforcement, vandalizing a police post and reportedly detonating hand grenades.

According to police, during the clash, Naruli police outpost Inspector Tariqul Islam was targeted and physically assaulted by attackers. The violent confrontation left 10 people injured, including three female police officers.

DB Police SI Ashikur Rahman and the injured are at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College.

A bus of Bogra Cantonment Public School and College was also targeted during the violence, resulting in severe injuries to eight-year-old Jumiya Zubair, a second-grade student, who needed 10 stitches for a head injury caused by shattered window glass.

During a press conference on Tuesday evening, Bogra BNP President Rezaul Karim Badsha, who is also the local municipality mayor, accused police of attacking their peaceful march.

He claimed that at least 200 leaders and activists were injured, with around fifty victims suffering gunshot wounds. He also mentioned 50 students falling ill due to teargas fired by police. However, he vehemently denied any involvement in the cocktail and stone-pelting attacks on police.

On Tuesday night, BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi held an emergency press conference at the BNP party office in Bogra. He stated that the world now knows about the farcical elections held by Sheikh Hasina in 2014 and 2018.

Rizvi strongly criticized the lack of genuine elections based on people's votes and emphasized the need for a fair and inclusive electoral process. He expressed determination to continue the ongoing one-point movement, despite potential violence and bloodshed.

Rizvi said similar to other places in the country, their peaceful march in Bogra was also attacked by police on Tuesday afternoon.

He accused police of conducting an unprecedented rampage, resulting in injuries to at least 200 of their activists due to firing and baton-charging. The activists now fear arrest, and Rizvi vehemently condemned the police's attack.
