Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami postponed their planned rally in Sylhet, which was scheduled for Saturday, to July 21, after failing to secure necessary permission from the Sylhet Metropolitan Police.
During a press conference held at the party's office in Bandarbazar area of Sylhet city on Saturday, Mahanagar Jamaat Amir Muhammad Fakhrul Islam said despite repeated requests, police refused to grant permission for the planned rally.
The police informed the party verbally on Friday night, he added.
He further claimed that this decision indicates a lack of respect for citizens' rights, democracy, and the rule of law in the country.
Fakhrul Islam further said that while the police did not give a clear explanation for the denial, various news outlets reported that the police denied permission due to fears of potential violence.
“The police had expressed similar concerns about a recent rally the party held in the capital. However, Jamaat-e-Islami had successfully conducted that rally peacefully, demonstrating that the party does not want any violence,” he emphasized.
