A Gazipur court has issued an arrest warrant against a union parishad chairman in Kapasia upazila of Gazipur in a case filed for reportedly raping his domestic help.
Gazipur Women and Children Repression Prevention tribunal issued the arrest warrant against Shakhawat Hossain Prodhan, also president of Kapasia upazila Jubo League unit.
Though the order was issued on Thursday, it came to light on Sunday.
Gazipur Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal bench assistant Moin Uddin Kiron confirmed the matter.
On August 31, 2022, the rape survivor's father filed the rape case with the tribunal under Women & Children Repression Prevention Act.
The domestic help also claimed the UP chairman is the father of her child.
According to the case statement, Sakhawat raped the 16-year old for several times.
At one stage, when she became pregnant, the chairman forcibly married the pregnant girl to his house servant.
Later, the chairman threw the pregnant girl out of the house and rented a house near Targaon Kheyaghat area of the upazila.
However, finally the girl gave birth to a baby girl on August 16 last year.
After the incident came to light, the chairman abducted the girl along with the child from the rented house on the night of August 29, 2022 to cover up the matter. The chairman then denied the abduction and rape.
Rahul Amin, Kapasia upazila social service officer, said the rape survivor and her child are kept at Child Development Centre (CDC), known as Sishu Unnyan Kendra, in Konabari Gazipur, as per the court order.
AHM Lutful Kabir, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kapasia police station said that they have yet to receive the arrest warrant.
Legal action will be taken upon arrival of the warrant, said the OC.
